Here is a short excerpt from one of our most popular lessons — The Second Conditional — so you know what to expect before you start.
When do we use the second conditional?
We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future and the result we would expect if those situations were real. The structure is If + past simple, would + base verb.
- If I had more time, I would learn another language.
- If she lived closer, we would see her every weekend.
- What would you do if you won the lottery?
Notice that were is often used instead of was with I, he, she, it in formal writing — If I were you, I would take the job.
Quick quiz question
If I ___ taller, I would play basketball professionally.
- A) am
- B) were ✓
- C) will be
- D) would be
The second conditional uses past simple after if. With I, both was and were are accepted, but were is preferred — and is the only correct option in standard exam answers.
Why Learn English Grammar with GramifyLearn?
English grammar is the foundation of clear communication. Without it, even simple conversations can become confusing. With it, you can express yourself accurately in writing, emails, job interviews and everyday speech. For deeper word study you can pair GramifyLearn with reference dictionaries like the Cambridge Dictionary grammar guide or the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries.
GramifyLearn teaches grammar in a practical way. Every lesson focuses on how the grammar is used in real life — not just abstract rules. You will see examples from conversations, business emails and everyday situations. If you want a broader academic perspective, the English grammar article on Wikipedia is a useful complementary read.
The built-in quiz system gives you immediate feedback. You will know instantly whether your answer is correct and why. Your mastery score for each lesson is tracked automatically, so you always know what to study next.
Why English Grammar Matters
GramifyLearn covers the four CEFR levels learners need most: A1 and A2 for absolute beginners, B1 for intermediate students, and B2 for upper-intermediate learners preparing for academic or professional contexts. Each level is mapped to the topics that examiners and recruiters expect you to master at that stage — from present simple and articles all the way to mixed conditionals, reported speech and the subjunctive.
Our pedagogical method is built on three principles: explanation, exposure and retrieval. First, every rule is explained in plain English, with form, meaning and common pitfalls clearly separated. Second, you see the structure used in realistic example sentences so the pattern becomes familiar before you produce it yourself. Third, every lesson ends with a randomised quiz that forces active recall — the most effective way to move grammar from short-term memory into long-term competence.
Academic learners use GramifyLearn to prepare for IELTS, Cambridge B1 Preliminary, B2 First and TOEFL writing tasks where grammar accuracy directly affects the score. Working professionals rely on it to write clearer emails, reports and proposals in international teams, where small mistakes around tenses, articles or modal verbs can undermine credibility. Travellers and casual learners use the bite-sized lessons to handle real conversations confidently — asking for directions, making polite requests or telling stories in the past — without freezing up over which tense to choose.
Whatever your goal, you can study at your own pace, in any order, and revisit any lesson as many times as you need. There are no ads inside the lessons, no paywalls, and no account required.
